Barn-Hayloft / Studio Conversion

Flooring
Our choices for the flooring material ranged from Pergo, laminate flooring, to reclaimed antique planks. We ended up purchasing Eastern White Pine, 1x10 wide planks from Carlisle Restoration Lumber in New Hampshire. In keeping with the environment of an old barn and also wanting to stay with natural materials, this choice was the best in terms of both design and cost. The main problem we ran into was the installation of the flooring over the in-floor heating system. Despite repeated requests for caution in securing the planks to the subfloor, the installer we hired punctured one of the heating lines. Unfortunately the repair was costly and set us back another week.

After installation the floor was covered during the remainder of construction. When we were ready to finish the floor, we rented an oscillating floor sander and then stained the floor using a MinWax stain, followed by two coats of fast drying polyurathane.
